Clean Energy

Now is the time to move America in the direction of cleaner, renewable energy such as wind, solar, bio-fuels and other potential sources. This is not only necessary to reduce global warming; it is essential in creating good jobs and keeping the US and Illinois economically competitive in a global marketplace. We can lead the world in these technologies – and the new industries they will spawn – but only if Congress provides the necessary incentives to reduce our dependence on foreign fuel sources.

I support the so-called cap-and-trade legislation passed by the House, which could be more accurately described as a national investment in clean and renewable energy. By using the market to incentivize such investments, we can achieve real progress with minimal disruption to our national economy and minimal cost to consumers.

Once again, the oil industry and big business have lined up to oppose needed investment in alternative energy sources. But the economic and environmental stakes are too high to allow them to block our progress. I will work in the Senate to help ensure that the U.S. takes the lead in pursuing and promoting clean, renewable energy – and the millions of good jobs and economic growth that could result.
